Innovative Ceramics: Melbourne - Hong Kong 2006
An exhibition of 25 ceramics artists from Hong Kong Taiwan and Australia

The teaching of Ceramics has been an integral part of art education at RMIT University since 1917. Since that time, the course has developed the continuing and proud tradition of training many of Australia’s leading artists and educators within the field.

Ceramics occupies a unique place in the history of material-based cultures and whilst we live in an age that has become increasingly dominated by global information and new technologies, contemporary ceramics continues to retain an enduring ability to enrich and invigorate. At a time of increasingly porous physical and cultural boundaries, education has also become more global and international in its outlook. In response to this spirit of internationalization, RMIT University initiated its BA Fine Art program in Hong Kong in 1997. This program is taught through a collaborative relationship with the Hong Kong Arts Centre, in the disciplines of Painting, Ceramics and Photography. A strong and co-operative rapport has evolved between the two institutions and their staff, and this spirit of mutual benefit and collaboration has inspired the development of this project.

This exhibition, Innovative Ceramics, aims to explore how a selected group of emerging ceramic artists from both cities have responded to the challenges of maintaining contemporary relevance from within the two distinctly different cultural and geographic perspectives. Furthermore, the exhibition aims to examine and comment on regional, global and cross-cultural perspectives and how these influence the artistic practices of the selected participants. The result is an exhibition of work that displays great diversity and ingenuity and presents exciting opportunities for new and challenging synergies to emerge.
