Rudolf Staffel
American Ceramic Artist
Rudi
Staffel (born 1911) is well known for his so-called 'Light
Gatherers', where he uses porcelain's translucency to emphasize
the effects of light in his ceramic work.
Staffel studued at the Chicago Institute of Art from 1929-1931
and has achieved considerable acclaim with his innovative porcelain
work since then. Vessels are wheel thrown and altered, with pieces
often added on later, to vary the amount of light passing through
the wall. The effects are further heightened by photgraphy against
a dark background.
Staffel won the 1996
PEW Fellowship, was the subject of a retrospective
in 1997 at the Philedelphia Museum of Art and exhibits at
Helen
Drutt Gallery Philadelphia.
