Sun Plate
11" in diameter; wheel-thrown white earthenware clay body, low-fired in oxidation firing; glazed in the majolica tradition using folk art brush techniques in overglazes on a white glaze base.

Artist's Statement: We all have an inherent need to create. For some of us it's like therapy, it soothes us and connects us to our spiritual nature. For some of us it's like an addiction or a burning desire that needs release. For many, working in clay satisfies these needs. The joy has been, for me, in experimenting with different clay bodies and glazing styles. In this piece I enjoyed the "painter's" freedom this majolica technique brings to the ceramic medium, and the vivid colors achieved by using a white clay body and a white glaze background. There is more happiness and satisfaction in the journey than there is in the finished product.
