Clay Water Whistle

This page is an appendix to Chris Henley's article on How to Make a Clay Whistle.

The images below are of a clay water whistle from Hungary, purchased about 20 years ago. It is fairly crudely press molded in earthenware clay and then painted, not glazed. My guess is that these whistles were/are made for children, and they wouldn't worry too much about a minor detail like that.

To make it work, some water is filled into the bird and when air passes above it, a quite realistic chirping sound is made. Chris Henley's cockatiels seem to go crazy over the sound! To hear it, click on the mp3 link - it's only 63kb.
